Magnum are an institution. They are one of Britain's greatest melodic Hard Rock bands, and have countless classic tracks. Trends come and go, but Magnum endures. I think that's their secret. They know what they are and what they do, and they do it to a very high standard, time and time again. The chemistry between guitarist and song writer Tony Clarkin, and singer Bob Catley is something really special, and every now and then they produce true magic.
Lost On The Road To Eternity is their 20th studio album, and Tony Clarkin is clearly still full of ideas and creative vision. If you liked Magnum before, this new record will prove to be a real treat. We have some great upbeat rockers on here, such as Without Love, Peaches and Cream, and Show Me Your Hands. There are also plenty of epic tracks full of both drama and the wonderful storytelling that Bob Catley delivers so well, such as Storm Baby, Tell Me What You've Got To Say and King of the World.
The title track is yet another epic masterpiece and features guest vocals from Avantasia/Edguy front-man Tobias Sammet, who also happens to be a huge fan of the band, and Magnum's influence on his own work is very obvious. His voice fits right into the Magnum sound, and this collaboration is certainly a highlight of the record.
Sonically, this record is a great mix of that classic sound they had on their first couple of albums, and the more keyboard driven material from the late 80's. I love all eras of the band, and I feel that this new record taps into the best elements of their legacy, creating something that's easily identifiable as Magnum, while providing material that sounds fresh and exciting.
Lost on the Road to Eternity is an absolute gem in their repertoire, and an all-round brilliant album. To have released this much music over the years, and to still be producing material at this calibre is a huge achievement, and I have the utmost respect for them. Let's hope that there are plenty more records to come!
